ABOUT DIVADLO JAZYKU
Divadlo jazyků is a nationwide event dedicated to learning and teaching foreign languages through drama and theatre. It is composed of a conference for language teachers and a festival of school theatre performances.
This year, Divadlo jazyků will take place from June 15th to 20th, 2011, in Prague, Czech Republic.
If you teach a foreign language and you are interested in the drama approach; if you produce theatre performances or skits with your students, or if you are just about to start a project like that for the first time, then Divadlo jazyků is for you.
Detailed information about organization and participation will be gradually added to this website.
Divadlo jazyků started in 2009. In the Na Pradle theatre in Prague, over fifty performances were shown, from ten-minute scenes to full-length plays. English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Czech as a foreign language were heard on stage. At the two day conference, over sixty teachers met to acquire new skills and to exchange their experience of using drama and theatre in language teaching.
The main organizer of the project is Základní škola Marjánka, a state basic school from Prague 6 that has been incorporating drama and theatre into language teaching since 2007. The project has been successfully managed thanks to intensive co-operation with Cambridge University Press and the Faculty of Education, Charles University, Prague. Financial support is generously provided by Městská část Praha 6.
NEWS
The second edition of Divadlo jazyku will take place from June 15th to 20th, 2011.

THE THEATRE FESTIVAL
The festival will take place from June 15th to 20th in Na Pradle theatre, which is situated in the very historical centre of Prague. Any theatre piece that is performed in a non-native language of the actors with the aim of language learning can be registered for the festival.
The main goal of the festival is to enable schools, teachers and students who share the interest in learning languages through drama and theatre to meet, view each other's work, and provide each other with inspiration and feedback, thus increasing the quality of language learning and teaching. The participants will be active both on stage and in the audience, acting, watching performances of their peers, discussing and evaluating them, participating in reflections of their own performances with expert advisers and taking part in creative workshops.
Using drama and theatre in language learning is becoming increasingly widespread. More and more students and teachers have opportunities to experience how effective and beneficial the drama approach can be. In order to further develop the approach together and see all its possibilities, we need a common platform where we can meet and share our discoveries. Divadlo jazyku was started in order to provide such a platform, and we will be happy if you join it too!

Využíváme moderní metody a postupy, ve výuce angličtiny pak extenzivně využíváme dramatický přístup, konkrétně metodu act and speak®. Tyto scénáře děti nejprve prostřednictvím her a zábavných cvičení poznávají a na konci roku pak inscenují.

Naším obrovským úspěchem a chloubou jsou nadšené skupiny studentů které dále rozvíjejí své první anglické divadelní zkušenosti z hodin angličtiny a zcela samostatně ve svém volném čase připravují vlastní anglické hry na vysoké jazykové i umělecké úrovni (představení inspirovaná tvorbou Monty Python, dále “The Importance of Being Earnest“, “Twist It, Oliver!“ – vlastní moderní adaptace Dickensova románu).
KUK!
Soubor KUK!

Gymnázium A. Jiráska, Litomyšl

TICKET PRICES AND RESERVATION
one-day ticket ............................................................................ 80 CZK
(children, students and seniors 20 CZK)
permanent ticket to all days of the festival ....................................350 CZK
(children, students and seniors 100 CZK)
Tickets for specific performance sequences (such as "Wednesday - afternoon program", "Thursday - morning program" and so on, see program) can be booked in advance at vstupenky_zsmarjanka.cz and picked up at the theatre no later than 30 minutes before the program begins.
PARTICIPANTS
Students and teachers performing at the festival do not need to purchase tickets. Upon arriving at the theatre for the first time, they will be given a participants's pass that functions as a ticket to all performances. However, the participant's pass does not guarantee a place to sit, and we strongly advise everyone to book a seat in advance, see the contact above. (This is not necessary to do for the actual day of your performance as in this case participants are expected to watch each other and most of the seats are automatically reserved for them.)
CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS
Upon arriving at the theatre for the first time, conference participants will receive a permanent ticket to all performances. For the performances scheduled for June 18, all conference participants have a guaranteed place to sit as long as they arrive no later than 15 minutes before the program begins. For other days of the festival, it is necessary to book seats in advance, see the contact above.
We look forward to seeing you at the festival!
Participating in the festival
All theatre pieces produced with the goal of second or foreign language learning are welcome at Divadlo jazyků. The type of school or a language course, the age of the performers, and their language level are not important. The only important criterion is that the play is performed in the target language of the actors, i. e. the actors (or at least some actors in the group) are not native speakers of the language. Registrations take place through filling out the registration form below. There will be a registration fee of 30 CZK per participant, which will be collected upon entering the theatre. The deadline for registrations will be March 31st, 2011. The groups will choose whether they will participate in the full program of the festival or whether they will perform outside of the main program.
The full program of the festival
If you enter the full program of the festival, it means your group is going to spend an intensive day together with other groups close to your age, performing for one another, providing and receiving feedback from one another and from expert advisers, and attending cretive workshops together. From each age-based category, some performances will be selected and invited to be shown again for an expert audience formed by the conference participants on Saturday June 18th. It is therefore necessary to include this date into your planning of the trip.
From one school, a program no longer than 40 minutes can enter this part of the festival. The 40 minutes include the time necessary for setting up the stage before the show and clearing it out in the end. Whether you use the time to perform one longer piece or several shorter skits is entirely up to you. The time limit will be extended only in case there are still vacancies after March 31th.
Schedulling other performances
If your performance is longer than 40 minutes, more demanding in terms of preparation or technical equipment, or if you would not be able to perform your show again on Saturday June 18 in case it were selected, we will schedule your performance outside of the main program. After you send us the registration form, we will offer you several dates and times for your performance and you will select the one that is suitable for you. The expected dates are June 15, June 19, and June 20th, and June 16-17 in the evening hours.

OTHER PERFORMANCES
We will gladly include all performances into the festival. Any kind of theatre performance that has been rehearsed as a means of learning a second or foreign language has our support and will get its place at Divadlo jazyků as long there is still capacity. Not all performances are suitable for participating in the age-specific categories though, which might be for the folliwing reasons:
- the performance is more than 40 minutes long (including set up and clean-up time)
- the group needs to leave Prague earlier and cannot stay until the evening of Saturday June
18th when the selected performances will be repeated
- the group would like to bring their own larger audience into the theatre
- the group cannot or does not want to participate in reflections and workshops in the planned
time
In case any of the above statements are valid for you, please send us the registration form and in the category section mark "other performances". We will offer you several dates and times for your performance and you will select one suitable for you. The expected dates are June 15, June 19, and June 20th, and June 16-17 in the evening hours.
Festival participants may organize their own accommodation, or they may use our assistance in one of the two following ways:
Lodging at Marjánka Primary School
Festival and conference participants can use free lodging at Marjánka primary school, Bělohorská 52, Prague 6 (very good public transport connection to the town centre and directly to the theatre). Please bring your own sleeping bags and ground pad. In case you would like to use this option, please write to ubytovani_zsmarjanka.cz.
Accomodation at the Strahov Dorm (for conference participants)
Accommodation for the conference participants is possible in Strahov Dorm. A double bed room is 600 CZK/day, a single bed room is 400 CZK/day. You can request breakfast for an extra 80 CZK. In case you are interested, please write to zdislava.cesmy_zsmarjanka.cz.
THE CONFERENCE
The conference will take place on the weekend of June 18-19, 2011 at the Faculty of Education, Charles University Prague. The main aim of the conference is to enable all language teachers who use or are interested in using drama and theatre in their teaching to meet, share their experience, improve and develop their teaching skills, find new supplies of techniques and activities for their classroom, and last but not least, become energized and freshly inspired through spending their weekend in a playful, stimulating and productive environment. Experts on various aspects of the drama approach to foreign language learning are going to share their skills and knowledge in both theoretical and practical presentations. In the afternoon, the participants will watch the festival performances in the Na Pradle theatre. The participation fee is 400 CZK.
The conference is accredited by the Ministry of Education under the number 25 205/2008-25-506.

PRESENTATIONS
Language, Adventure, Imagination: Staging FLLT in theatre projects, at schools and universities (Adrian Haack and Franziska Elis, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany)
Principles, methods and activities from the field of Drama Pedagogy can enrich almost any classroom and learning environment focusing on communication - be it a class of early English learners at elementary school, a group of teenagers on a holiday camp or a course of university students on their way to becoming teachers of foreign languages. Thus, foreign language skills can be developed in a playful and holistic way and communicative and social competences are trained, both in foreign language learning and teaching (FLLT). Individual inhibitions can be overcome in the safeguard of the as-if and role-play, and eventually learners improve their `lifeworld performance`. In our talk we will present various examples and results from projects, seminars and workshops we have been carrying out at Göttingen University over the last few years with pupils of different age groups and backgrounds, students and teachers. For illustration, we will use video excerpts, photos and results from `collaborative creative work`, developed in theatre projects, university classes and on language holiday camps (e.g. our recent “Adventure Theatre Camp” for teenagers). Furthermore, first results of our qualitative and quantitative research will help to specify and validate aims and proceedings. For anyone already involved in drama in education, we hope to deliver scientific acknowledgement and new ideas; anyone still skeptic we aim to convince and give an impulse to go out there and get started. Let´s be adventurous – let´s be imaginative!
Improvisation for language learners (Bára Dočkalová, Language school Jeviste and Basic School Marjánka)
Dramatic improvisation provides perfect training for communicating in unprepared situations. However, the way to becoming a good improviser often involves learning through exercises that are not primarily focussed on language learning (mime, movement etc.) and that are therefore difficult to justify in a language course. In this workshop, I would like to share some ideas for helping language learners become great improvisers through exercises that are language exercises in the first place.
Drama in language teaching and learning (young learners) (Lenka Nováková, Cambridge University Press)
The seminar focuses on using drama situations, texts and drama games. The participants will practice various drama techniques like pair work, group work, TPR, pantomime, improvisation etc. The importance of incorporating these techniques into lessons will be explained, experiencing all the activities will be the essential part of the seminar. A database of sources (e.g. CUP materials) will be made available to the participants. The seminar is aimed at teachers of young learners (10-16 years of age).
Acting out songs and chants (František Chlaň, Základní škola Marjánka)
Over thirty years ago the American singer and ESL teacher Carolyn Graham created her first jazz chants by playing with the natural rhythm of American English. Rhythm and rhyme can turn tedious memorizing into amusement. Why not make these two powerful tools even more efficient by enriching them with emotions and action? The participants will get acquainted with some of Graham’s classic songs and chants. They will try out creating their own chants and they will learn how to make use of some well-known catchy tunes for fixating vocabulary and grammar structures. Having discussed various approaches of acting out the chants, groups of participants will try dramatizing them into short sketches.
From a still image to natural acting: Using theatre techniques in language teaching with a focus on natural performance (Michaela Lažanová, katedra výchovné dramatiky DAMU Praha)
In this seminar, I would like to share the essential steps of a working process in which the emphasis is not only on developing the students' language competences, but also on developing their acting skills. The work will lead from simultaneous activities to group activities that we will observe and discuss. We will take a brief insight into each stage of the work. Our aim will be, among others, to acquire basic theatre competences that lead to successful theatre presentations. The main technique used will be still image and its variations.
Using four emotions to create powerful short scenes (David Fisher, The Bear Educational Theatre)
This is a workshop is designed for teachers working with students aged 11 to 16. It presents a simple but very effective format that helps students to create original but powerful short theatre scenes, which can themselves be the basis for more language work. The idea is to show that you don't have to be a great actor to make good theatre. And you don’t have to be an experienced theatre director to give your students a rewarding theatre experience.
Acting confidently when you don't feel confident: Presentation techniques through drama games and storytelling (Leah Gaffen, Class Acts)
We often talk about the needs of children or students, but what about the needs of the teachers? This workshop will look at theatre, storytelling and communication techniques that can help the teacher develop skills and confidence as a drama leader.
Structuring stories for young learners (Šárka Dohnalová, katedra AJL MU Brno)
Stories give a very good context framework to language work. This approach is looking for possible places for activities within stories as a chance to practice foreign language in a meaningful context. Story-based syllabus offers plentiful possibilities for exploring the story into great depths simultaneously with practicing all the four skills in the natural order starting with listening, speaking, reading and only then writing. We will be using practical samples of work to explore some of the possibilities that can be found within stories. We will be using movement, gestures, voice, visuals, feltboard.
Možnosti hodnocení aktivit ve výuce s divadelními postupy (Marie Kestřánková, ÚBS FF UK) in Czech
Framing a text or a recording in radio role play (Karel Žďárek, KAJL PedF UK)
Welcome to the “Radio 1 studio”, a safe and enjoyable environment for every kind of role play situation. The workshop aims to help teachers design a role play activity, cueing material (role/task cards, visuals). Using your own material, we will learn to create a tangible context in which the role play activity will take place. As the workshop progresses, we will use the format of a radio programme to frame any teaching material. We’ll also explore how radio role play can be used for an improvised, guided, or scripted variety series. The outcome can be an inspiration for a stage performance. Note: please bring a piece of language material (ideally a piece of text) that you find most uninteresting or in any way unsuitable for a role play.
Bára Dočkalová is the founder and director of Jeviste, a small language school that specializes in teaching languages through drama and theatre. She has taught drama- and theatre-based language courses for various age groups since 2005, both in the Czech Republic and in the U.S.A. She writes musical EFL plays for children as well as adults. She has taught drama and methodology courses to future English teachers at the Faculty of Education, Charles University Prague. She has designed and developed her own original drama-based FLT method called act and speak, the foundation of which she had laid in her diploma thesis "Drama Project with a Mixed Ability Group" in 2003. In 2007, the act and speak method was incorporated into the language teaching program at Základní škola Marjánka, where Bara now works, teaching English and developing a drama-based curriculum for grades 1 - 5. Together with the Marjanka school, she organizes Divadlo jazyků.
Adrian Haack: Torn between becoming a teacher of English, running holiday camps and theatre groups for children and acting himself, the undergraduate student Adrian Haack found a combination of all his interests and passions in Carola Surkamp´s FLT- class “Drama in the Foreign Language Classroom” in 2006. Having been well-taught in her school of action-/production-orientation and drama-pedagogical methods, soon cooperation between the two arose, also including fellow student Franziska Elis. It resulted in several theatre projects encouraging pupils to act in a foreign language on stage and turning students of the teaching profession into playwrights, actors and directors. Observation, research data and the development of concepts entailed joint publications and Adrians thesis (“Language through Drama through Drama: Experiencing and Applying Theatre Methods in the Education of Foreign Language Teachers”) in 2010. Currently Adrian Haack is working on his dissertation in the field of teacher education and drama pedagogy; for making a living he is also running and teaching in a university programme for key competences in teacher education with practical relevance for the classroom.
Franziska Elis finished her studies in English and Chemistry at the Georg- August- University of Göttingen in 2009. In her final thesis, which originated from Carola Surkamp’s course on “Drama Activities in the Foreign Language Classroom” in 2008, she worked on the use of drama activities in early foreign language learning to improve students’ speaking skills (Original title: „Förderung des Sprechvermögens durch Drama-Aktivitäten: Theorie und Praxis im Anfangsunterricht Englisch“). She has been teaching and researching for her PhD at the Georg-August-University Göttingen since October 2009. With her dissertation she is aiming at developing a concept to smooth the transition from grade four to five for pupils as well as teachers by making use of the potential of drama, especially in the Foreign Language Classroom. Her main research interest is the implementation of drama pedagogical approaches for teaching English as a foreign language at different levels. She has been gaining data and experience in several theatre projects, in cooperation with Adrian Haack, over the last few years.
Michaela Lažanová likes to play. She first graduated from the Bohemistics program at the Philosophical Faculty, Charles University Prague. She taught Czech as a foreign language at several language schools, and she taught Czech language and literature at Czech high schools and an English grammar school. She was constantly looking for ways of making Czech lessons more enjoyable for the students, and that is also why she entered another university program: creative drama at the DAMU, which she completed first with a bachelor and then with a master's degree. In her free time she takes part in reciting festivals, both as a participant (Šrámkova Sobotka, Wolkrův Prostějov, Valašské Meziříčí...) and as a judge (Pražské poetické setkání, Dětská scéna); she participates in theatre sports both as a player (KoPřIVA and OtISk teams) and as a coach (StřeLi team), and she creates various drama in education projects. She enjoys working with both children and adults in a way that allows them to play as much as possible while learning.
František Chlaň studied English and philosophy at Charles University. Apart from his trial-and-error method, his way of teaching is mostly indebted to three courses: Reading and Writing for Critical thinking, Introduction to Act & Speak and Drama Education for Contemporary School. He has taught regular and intensive English courses for adults, a critical thinking seminar for students of Gymnázium Zatlanka and English through drama education for pupils of stage one at ZŠ Marjánka. He writes scripts for children (Bookland, performed in 2010 and 2011) and experiments with dramatizing Carolyn Graham’s Songs and Chants. More details on www.jazykvhrsti.cz.
David Fisher is an actor, director, and author of many educational theatre plays for students of various age groups. He is the founder and director of The Bear Educational Theatre that teaches English through interactive theatre performances. He organizes and teaches workshops for language teachers that are focussed on using drama and theatre, improvisation, and games in the language classroom. He organizes Class in Action, an international festival of English school theatre performances.
Leah Gaffen started using theatre as a means to teach English in 1993, when she came to Prague. Since then she has created English shows and taught drama to students of all ages. She started a project called Class Acts, in which she produced shows in English with Czech children and organized annual theatre festivals. From 1998-2001 she led the English Drama Education Network (EDEN), a British Council initiative to train English teachers in drama. Recently Class Acts became a nonprofit organization dedicated to organizing cultural activities in English for children (www.classacts.cz). Through Class Acts, Leah currently teaches drama and does storytelling and theatre for young children. She also organizes street theatre festivals and puppet workshops for adults with her husband, a professional puppet designer (www.puppetsinprague.eu).
Karel Žďárek teaches English, Drama and PE at Gymnazium Jana Keplera and ELT Methodology and Drama in Education at the Faculty of Education, Charles University Prague where he is currently working on his doctoral studies (Developement of communicative competence using drama techniques). He is a member of a theatre group called Divadlo bez prken and can be seen in two (both) of their plays. His natural inclination towards the use of role-play in teaching English has become a ubiquitous part of his teaching style. Intrigued by his love for improvisation and acting and inspired by Thornbury´s Dogme95 he enjoys the challenges of substituting various classes „open-handed“ building lessons from scratch and thrilled to see what´s about to come next.

Divadlo jazyků started in 2009. On the Divadlo Na Prádle stage over fifty performances were shown, from ten-minute sketches to full-length plays. English, German, French, Russian, Italian, Spanish, and Czech as a foreign language were heard on stage. On the conference, over sixty teachers with the interest in the drama approach met to gain new skills, knowledge, and inspiration.

The conference was excellent. Something like that has been missing here for a long time.
Dagmar Štanclová, Základní škola Třebíč
I would like to say thank you one more time for the opportunity to perform at the festival. It was the conclusion of the year's work for us, and a very valuable, unforgettable experience for the children. I must admit I had concerns about what the organization in the theatre would be like: whether there would be enough time for preparing the stage, whether the dressing room wouldn't be crowded, whether the schedule would be kept. The more surprised I was by the relaxed atmosphere. It was amazing, both behind the curtain and in front of it, and we even had a big audience.
Hana Sulková, ZŠ Filosofská
The conference was very well organized and the atmosphere was productive and friendly because there were dedicated professionals both on the side of organizers and on the side of participants. Such encounters are greatly beneficial and motivating for everyone. So many thanks to all the organizers and see you again sometime in the future.
